How To Install A Tankless Hot Water Heater

by Arlington Plumber - The Plumbing Dr on May 18, 2012

A tankless water heaters are an ideal means to lower monthly energy bills. These hot water heaters use up to 50% less energy than the standard hot water heaters. While they will save energy and money, they can be somewhat complicated to install. The installation process is not suggested for those who are unable to use or acquire power tools and a soldering iron.

First the individual should get all the tools needed for the job. These will include one of the many varieties of tankless water heaters, a garden hose, pipe cutter, propane torch, 1/2 inch copper pipe, 3/4 inch copper pipe, a solder, and some soapy water. It is then time to turn off the water entering the house, and the line to the hot water heater.

The next step is to drain the hot water heater. Attach the garden hose in order to do this. One will then need to stop the energy supply to the heater. This will entail either closing the gas valve, or unplugging the electric supply. Then it is time to remove the old hot water heater, and dispose of it.

Now it is time to deal with the tankless hot water heater. Take it out of the box. Do a soft read through all of the instructions before attempting installation.make sure all the materials needed are accounted for and present. Then decide on where the unit will be installed. Mount the unit in the designated spot and install the waterlines. A solder will be useful in sealing all attachments to ensure no leakage.

Then it is time to reattach the power source. If it is natural gas, reattach the line in the designated spot. If the heater is electric, make sure that everything is secure and grounded before throwing the power switch to on. The gas variety tankless water heaters will need to have the pilot lit soon after the lines are turned on.

The last step will be to ensure that if natural gas is being used as the power source, there are no leaks. Use a mixture of water and dish detergent to put on the line and around the connection to the water heater. Once the gas is on, if bubbles arise from the line or connections there is a leak. If tightening the connections does not rectify the leak, contact a local plumbing professional as soon as possible.
